SEED CYCLING: A simple, inexpensive, whole food technique that can easily be added to your daily routine. Its a great way to decrease supplements and monthly symptoms.
So seed cycling is essentially the monthly rotation of 4 different types of seeds (Flax, Pumpkin, Sesame & Sunflower) in 2 phases of the monthly cycle to help naturally rebalance hormone levels in the body. An imbalance of low Progesterone and excess Estrogen in the body (from xenoestrogens in our environment, food, beauty products) contribute to many of our monthly symptoms including acne, cramping, irregularity, clotting, bloating, mood swings to name a few. Reducing excess Estrogen and supporting healthy hormone production, through whole foods, is what seed cycling is all about.
Seed cycling is also extremely useful in helping irregular cycles return to a healthy rhyme, by synching up with the lunar cycle. The first half of the menstrual cycling is called Phase 1 or the Follicular phase, this is during Day 1 (flow begins) to Day 14 (ovulation), ideally synching our Day 1 with the New moon and Day 14 with the Full moon for increased vitality and fertility.
During the first Phase Estrogen rises in the body; introducing Flax, rich in lignans, and Pumpkin seeds, high in zinc, increase Omega 3's, which supports healthy cell production, blocks excess estrogen and promotes progesterone for phase 2. Phase 2, or Luteal phase, is from Day 15 (Full moon) to Day 28 (flow),or so depending on your individual cycle, at this time Progesterone rises. Introducing Sesame and Sunflower seeds, rich in Omega 6's, help block estrogen, while Sunflower seeds, high in Selenium, support the liver with the breakdown and detoxification of estrogen, increasing the Progesterone to Estrogen ratio in the body and maintaining balanced hormonal pattern.
- You will need whole raw, preferably organic, Flax, Pumpkin, Sesame and Sunflower seeds kept in the refrigerator.
- A coffee grinder if you will be adding them to foods or a blender to add to smoothies.
PHASE 1 : DAY 1- DAY 14 ---> 1 TBS of Flax and 1 TBS of Pumpkin seeds ground fresh and added to a meal or smoothie daily.
PHASE 2 : DAY 15- DAY 28 ---> 1 TBS of Sesame and 1 TBS of Sunflower seeds ground fresh and added to a meal or smoothie.
This natural whole foods approach takes a bit of time, so give the body about 3 months to get in to the swing of things.
